i've tried the pop version of gmail. i must say that even though it is ultra cool to get webmail via a pop client, you lose some of that lovable gmail functionality.

1) everything comes into your inbox (even sent mail, and i think spam, too); it looks like the pop process is pulling from the "all mail" area of gmail.

2) no more labels; labels are my favorite thing in gmail. i apply 2 or 3 labels to every email. it makes finding messages guaranteed. if you aren't using labels, you are missing out on one of the biggest differenciators of gmail (second only to the 1gb size limitation). anyway, you'll have to reorganize your messages inside your pop client via the old-school folders method.

...that's not to say the pop access doesn't have it's merits:

1) if you prefer a thick pop client over a web client, the pop method is the way to go. may i recommend mozilla thunderbird?

2) you can read your mail offline.

color schemes are difficult to dream up from scratch. adam polselli has done a fabulous job of creating some really good ones. i discovered hisw work while browsing the css zen garden and coming across his design.

you might already know about the css before/after pseudo elements, but i wasn't aware that you could use them to generate content as well.

basically, you can insert content/text from CSS w/o it actually being in the markup. this is good for someone who is using a static website, where they currently have to duplicate code like the page branding.

of course, msie6 doesn't seem to support this, so use at your own risk!
