Tivo 2
With Tivo’s major competitor SonicBlue filing Chapter 11 [1], one might wonder what is in the future for Tivo. By all accounts, Tivo is a great service. The major nice thing is its ability to record shows by name, not just by time. It is a bit pricey to hit the mainstream. There are people who will pay $50 or even $80 per month for an entertainment service, but the sweet spot of the market is probably about $35.
What to do. Linux to the rescue again. Tivo itself is built on Linux. The information about TV programming is available on the net [2]. Just a little hardware and software and you can roll your own. The following [3] is a build-your-own Tivo replacement call Freevo. I have not looked at it in detail, but it looks interesting so far.
