Monday, I need to press charges, or think about pressing charges against my client's thief. We know for sure he was stealing as we found product in his car. Several other employees have indicated their willingness to testify if we need them in court. They saw him steal product.
The problem I have is that the police officer who was helping us, made a commitment, without our permission. He told the man we would not press charges if he returned all the product he had that week to the police station.
The man returned 12 of our products. Not many when we believe he had been minimally stealing $900. a week of product for months. So, he didn't return all of our product, in our opinion.
Understand that this hire occurred before my time, and I have instituted controls since then. The person was a convicted arsonist, on probation, with a $68,000 restitution debt, and several years behind in child support payments. I believe the company hired him to give him a "chance." He was a true con artist in every sense of the word, with various of our managers wanting to promote him because he was so talented.
So goes the discussion on Monday. What would you do?
I now recommend many background checks in addition to the ones my client was doing.
Warmly,
Susan
