Answerland's Weblog
Librarians in Oregon are designing a multi-type virtual reference service to bring librarians to patron desktops all over the state. But there's a lot to decide. Our weblog highlights crucial issues and offers Oregon librarians a place to contribute their insight.

Instant Messaging for Pilot Libraries

All Pilot Libraries have been registered with AOL's Instant Messaging. We would like to see how this can help us communicate among ourselves as we work our reference sessions or seek to practice. At the least, it may give us a sense of community. Here's what you do:

  • Go to AOL's instant messaging site and get the software. It's the link in the column at the left that says "Get AIM."
  • Install the software (or have your resident techie do it). It's easy. (You do need administrative privileges for your machine in order to do it, though).
  • Log in using the name and password we've already established for you. I sent these separately by email, to avoid letting the whole world see them. Call me at 503-988-4228 or email me at evam@multcolib.org, if you don't have them or lost them.
  • You should see an Answerland group there. Is anyone on? Click on their name and then click on the IM icon to start an instant messaging session.

Send comments about any good uses for IM in relation to this project or other ideas for which IM might help keep communication, training, and teambuilding going well.
