As I play with Radio more and more, the briefer I get. Now for some funny picture.

I spent 8 hours looking up stuff and reading and I've got three vendors for you. Reactive Sounds, Creative and Minidisco. If they can't do it no one will.

How does someone who isn't an Audio Engineer by training or avocation going to know what gear to buy? When doing second system sound recording with video, how do know how much to spend? Let us count the possibities, shall we?

This guy gets my vote for someone who wanted to pull the tiger's tail. He wouldn't be threatened or intimidated and especially not after he tried being a good Catholic and saw all the hypocrisy. This documentary does a good job trying to show the independence of his spirit.

Q3 2003 earnings conference call roundup. We've posted a roundup of Apple's third quarter 2003 financial analyst conference call with Apple CF... [MacNN | The Macintosh News Network]

I had an email exchange with a coworker about the prospects of the G5 luring away PC users. It appears from the financial report iTunes and the PC iPod and the Apple Music store are stealth attempts to woo away PC users. Had this happened earlier when all the switcher ads were on and the iLife products were still getting all kinds of acclaim it might have gotten more momentum going. But now, it is a solitary effort to start the train moving again now that the Switcher ads are gone and iLife doesn't seem that unique or kewl anymore.

Apple shows off G5, Panther. Executives demonstrate hardware, OS improvements [InfoWorld: Top News]

Infoworld actually does a great job reporting the news here. I think the daily Mac web pages tend to regurgitate the press releases too much. This article looked at things a little more broadly than what was even covered in most of the original press releases when the G5 was introduced. This at least provides Apple the service of getting the features communicated out when there may not always be corresponding bullet points for them in the press release. Thanks for the thoroughness. I had almost forgotten about Expose! I'm looking forward to using it when I buy my copy of Panther this Fall.

Macromedia's Contribute for Mac OS X due July 28. Macromedia will release Contribute will for Mac OS X on July 28. Contribute is a desktop application designed to provide an easy-to-use way for non-technical users to update Web pages and add pages to existing Web sites, Product Manager Erik Larson told MacCentral. Webmasters can control what sections of a site people can edit, they can automatically lock out all server code on a page, and more, while end users can't change something they don't understand. [MacCentral]

Macromedia finally got around to doing Contribute for the Mac and will thankfully be throwing in sftp! Whew! It's about time. I think we're going to enter now a second evolutionary stage in webserver publishing and management that "leap frogs" the wild popularity of content management systems. Contribute is much lighter weight than a full on CMS and is more a point-to-point content management or maybe even peer-to-peer where Contribute edits something conceived and born in Dreamweaver. The two clients have enough smarts to consult the XML file with all the directives telling what areas are protected and who can make changes. Kudos to the engineers that concocted that process in an era where monolithic Content Management was being bidded out to anyone calling themselves a consulting company. Contribute has a much lower cost and implementation threshold. I think they are going to sweep up all the low end and a lot more of the middle part of the market with this product called Contribute.

WiebeTech rolls out host of new products. WiebeTech has released six new products: the BayDock, the Forensic BayDock, the Serial ATA Dock (SATADock), a Serial ATA PCI host card, MicroGB800, FireWire Encrypt and USB2 Encrypt. The BayDock lets you install one, two or four removable drives within one enclosure with each drive supported by an independent FireWire 400 bridge. What's more, each bay can be equipped with an "InfoTray" intelligent LCD indicator that offers immediate visual access to drive health information, such as temperature, time in use and other data. [MacCentral]

The engineering folks at Wiebetech have done it again. They beat everyone to market on the Mac side with a Serial ATA product. Where is ACARD? Where is Adaptec? No one is interested in the Mac because the market is so small, and nothing could be clearer than Adaptec's slowly eroding support of Mac OS X. They wouldn't support OS X when it came out, and they seemed to stay away from keeping the PC/Linux offerings up to date with the Mac offerings. ATTO at least has been constantly keeping drivers up to date, and keeping PC and Mac product lines up to date. Adaptec wants volume, but ATTO is seeking higher end users wanting high performance product. Way to go ATTO, thanks for sticking in there, Mac users know who the loyal vendors are.

Intersil to bow out of WLAN biz. Consolidation commences [The Register]

I remember attending a NYSERTECH meeting down in Manhattan in January of 2002. Cisco did a presentation there for all the schools on NYSERNET talking about the future paths in Wireless. They were talking all about Intersil and Atheros, the two kings of wireless chipsets. And Lucent was the only game in town for 802.11b and 802.11a was coming on like gangbusters. NOW, Lucent has faded fast, Cisco has a legitimate wireless product line finally and now, Intersil. Oh, how the mighty have fallen, they were the leading contender for all new products in Wireless access points until the bottom fell out of the margins and Linksys was bought out by Cisco. It's a crazy time indeed and the consolidation is grinding away now.

New: Radeon 9800 Mac Edition. ATI debuted its Radeon 9800 Mac Edition powerhouse graphics card at $399 - it's a build-to-order option for the Power Mac G5. [MacInTouch]

At long last ATI is matching on the Mac some of the products released last year on the PC. Man has it been a long wait. Didn't the PC version of the 9800 come out last August or September? Suffice it to say I'm glad it's here, but I don't know if it would be wiser to buy a cheaper Nvidia Titanium 4, which was the top of the line card until today. Other World Computing has them listed at $100 less than the Apple Store which still is selling them at the $400 list. I wish there was a Tom's Hardware Guide for Mac hardware so I could see benchmarks of the Titanium 4 and Radeon 9800, then I could make an informed choice. I should probably hold off though I bought my current Radeon 8500 back in January. I should probably hold onto it a little longer.

Sony announce new RGBE CCD. Sony Corporation (Japan) has today announced that it will be implementing a new four color filter array pattern on a 'consumer CCD' (we can only assume this is the new ICX456 eight megapixel CCD sensor).... [Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com)]

I'm just speculating here, but it would appear that Sony might be pulling this out at a time when Foveon's VX3 is demonstrating CMOS, high fidelity sensors can work in the upper-middle range of digital cameras. $1400 is a lot to spend for a digital still camera, but it is not the MOST expensive one you can buy through retail channels. I think Sony wants to show CCD's are still a wise choice and can have a higher fidelity without costing a lot extra. Paradigm shifts like the Foveon CMOS sensor sometimes are hard to catch on, but I feel that it's inevitable that CCD will eventually be superceded by CMOS or run 50/50 against CMOS chips, with each one fulfilling its market niche. I would like to see what products Sony puts the RGBE CCD into (digital still or scanner?)
