In Which the Word 'Acerbic" is Hazarded.

Mr. Pusk, author of the Southern Fu Manchu's diabolical adventures was a young Atlantean smitten first by the Muse through the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Sp? particularly those red girls on Mars...).

Professor Forstman tells us:

"Bondage was the lock and key of the mysterious Chinese Doctor's allure in the imaginations of the young men and boys of the Thirties in America. Mr. Pusk was instructed by his employer: "Get 'em tied up a lot. Especially the girls." Addleson even proposed a sponsorship package to a Hardware Distributorship."

"It ain't the Twenties," was that owner's acerbic reply.

Anyway the Red Girl was Mr. Pusk's creation. Fu Manchu had yellow skin and green eyes. His daughter had ivory skin and green eyes. There were no girls of red hue in the Fu Manchu Stories that anyone so far has been able to discover (but perhaps you know of one?) prior to the one dreamed up by Mr. Pusk that Mr. Stigely should read of her constant being tied upness in his sonorous voice in the ballroom of the Atlanta Parks Hotel.

In Which Barnes Explains His Theory To Harvey. They Speak of Love.

"Harvey, the Highway system has afforded us rakes and adventurers of poor estate an opportunity we didn't get from King Railway and King Cotton. But you mark my words: they'll fight this War, and then they're gonna come along with that T.V. That T.V. is gonna hypnotize these crackers like Fu Manchu. Do you remember how Royce used to tell how it was to get laid that last War?"

"Oh They'll Raise "Em Up For Flags!" Harvey sings in memory of Royce's tales of tail. He has a fine baritone voice from having gone to church so much.

"Hanney says it's that way in Houston already. Guess it will be here. 'Oh, It's Off To Die I Go,' " Barnes' voice is not so practised and nasally imitates the Radio. "There'll be Plump Safety in August and Soldier Babies next Christmas," Barnes says (note says... he doesn't sing that last bit... actually he could sing that last bit...). Hanney's gonna join up cause he figures the Army is gonna take over after the War."

"Hanney's a fool. Suppose they did? Same men that run the Army have worked his family like dogs the past hundred years and more. He ain't tired of barking yet? So you saying Houston girls are giving it up to boys who say they going in the Army?"

"Sure."

"Damn, I hadn't considered that. I've been worrying about these tires."
