WASHINGTON - Congressional Republicans will start writing a 2005 budget facing the daunting news that Congress' number crunchers think President Bush (news - web sites)'s plans would yield $2.75 trillion in deficits over the next decade.

Just eight months from presidential and congressional elections, Friday's projection by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (news - web sites) provided the first authoritative long-term look at Bush's fiscal blueprint. It envisioned deficits in the decade ending 2014 getting no smaller than $242 billion, then rising again.

Here is some mind boggling but PERTINENT political information. Our interest accrued on our national debt for the month of December was over $82 Billion Dollars. Below is an interest chart with historical context.

The national debt as of two days ago (gets higher every day) stands at $7,010,088,657,339.47. That is over 7 Trillion Dollars. Following the interest chart below is another table of our national debt. All figures are courtesy of the U.S. Treasury.

Try taking the following numbers on a calculator and dividing by our population of 290 million, you will be shocked. Then consider what a 10 to 12 Trillion Dollar national debt will do to us. That is what is now projected by the Congressional Budget Office as our debt by 2010 if Bush programs and tax cuts remain intact and the current economic conditions continue. Voting for more of the same just does not appear to be a viable option to this voter.

NATIONAL DEBT AWARENESS CENTER
Updated 1 December 2003
The National Debt is $6.9 Trillion!
Check it yourself at the U. S. Treasury Department web site, it changes daily.

The interest expense on the National Debt is the third largest expense in the federal budget. Only Defense and income redistribution are higher.

Last year (FY03 just ended) the U. S. Government spent $318 Billion of your money on interest payments* to the holders of the National Debt. Compare that to NASA at $14 Billion, Education at $32 Billion, and Department of Transportation at $51 Billion.
