NY Observer: "I [Bush] get briefed by [chief of staff] Andy Card and [National Security Advisor] Condi [Rice] in the morning. They come in and tell me ... I glance at the headlines just to [get?] kind of a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who are probably read [sic] the news themselves ... And the best way to get the news is from objective sources. And the most objective sources I have are people on my staff who tell me what's happening in the world.
Speaking with a British journalist last November, Mr. Bush further explained why he doesn't read newspapers: "It's not to say I don't respect the press. I do respect the press. But sometimes it's hard to be an optimistic leader. A leader must project an optimistic view. It's hard to be optimistic if you read a bunch of stuff about yourself." Surely his staffers smile when they give him the good news every morning, too."
Bush is out of sync with the world! Afterwards, he can always say 'Wir haben es nicht gewußt." I wonder what Condi will come up with before the war crimes court. [Heli's Heaven and Hell Radio]

Secrecy News (fas.org): "The Supreme Court today turned away a petition to review the Bush Administration's policy of withholding the names of hundreds individuals detained after September 11. The disclosure of detainees identities and related information had been requested under the Freedom of Information Act.
The Supreme Court action leaves in place a June 2003 appellate court decision that appears to significantly expand judicial deference to executive branch secrecy. See: http://www.fas.org/sgp/jud/cnss061703.pdf

A critical view of that decision was provided by the plaintiffs in the case, led by the Center for National Security Studies, in their petition to the Supreme Court: http://www.cnss.org/CNSS%20Cert%20Petition%20Final.pdf

The reply from the Office of Solicitor General, which successfully argued against Supreme Court review of the case, is here: http://www.usdoj.gov/osg/briefs/2003/0responses/2003-0472.resp.pdf"

The above documents are understandable only to lawyers, but they are important. Secrecy is a characteristic of all totalitarian regimes. With this decision America draws nearer to the Hitler regime. In these cases there is no control over the judiciary process, no accountability. For those involved America has become a totalitarian state, similar to the Saddam regime. Osama bin Laden must be smiling now, making America a shadow of itself was his aim. [Heli's Heaven and Hell Radio]

THE HOWARD DEAN campaign was forced to cancel events this week in response to events in Iraq. Donations to the Odai and Qusai Hussein Memorial Fund can be submitted directly to the Dean campaign.
