Over The Hedge

I took Bricey to an advance screening of Over The Hedge. Emma didn't want to come. She wants to see it when it's officially released for some reason.

Cute movie. Kinda like a Looney Toon. Talking animals, my favorite genre ;)

The soundtrack was by Ben Folds, which was a nice touch - featuring "Rocking The Suburbs" in the end credits, with different lyrics!

I find it really curious that all these computer rendered movies make the animals, creatures, objects all look so good, and yet they can't get the people to look anything but cartoony.

Melbourne is in need of a very big thing

A former high school friend of mine has an opinion piece in The Age. Anthony O'Neill (we knew him as Shane) has gone on to be an author, with a number of books published.

His opinion piece - Melbourne is in need of a very big thing - ponders how Melbourne is in need of a world-renowned landmark (or some other Big Thing).

His conclusion, which he calls the Tower of Baiame:

Consider this. A great lattice tower netted with ivy and other creepers for as high as they will climb and bloom. Bedecked with overflowing flowerboxes - the most vibrant flowers on Earth. Interchangeable flora, too, so that the tower's colour scheme would change every season, and a return visitor might never see the same tower twice.

Rainbow lorikeets feed on the decks. Irrigating water gurgles through transparent pipes and fills the air with mist. At night the tower lights up with softly glowing floral lamps.

As a location, anywhere from Royal Park to Fawkner Park or even Herring Island in the middle of the Yarra. But really, there are a thousand empty spaces around the city begging to be ornamented.

I like it. Good work Shane, oh I mean Anthony.

Early Birthday Present for Me

I got a nice surprise this week at work. I got an early birthday present from one of my team members.

It was a signed copy of the Steve Waugh autobiography "Out Of My Comfort Zone".

Yes, it was signed by the great man himself. The dedication read:"To Frank, Come on The Saints", complete with signature.

Well, I was lost for words.

Xmas time goodies : USB Snowman

I'm going to continue the tradition I started last year, when I gave everyone in the team a USB Xmas Tree.

This year, the USB Snowman has tickled my fancy. I like his furry hat and scarf, and the fact that it is glows AND is multi coloured.

I bought it from an online retailer who is based in Sydney. I did a quick search and they were the lowest priced, so that appealed to me.

I would really like more comparison shopper type of services - there are some for books, cds and dvds - but i guess until there is a simple way of getting price information, rather than screen-scraping, it isnt going to happen too soon.

Anyways, I get my little fellow next week and I will surprise all the team, unless of course if they have read my blog!!

Innovation Conference in Melbourne

My good buddy, and former Microsoftee, Cameron Reily has become a voracious blogger.

This morning he posted a piece about an innovation conference he wants to run in Melbourne. I think this would be a well attended event. Australia needs this kind of stuff happening. There is a lot of negative feelings around technology innovation at the moment, or it is perceived as too hard, too expensive or just fleeting.

Cam was Robbed!

I didnt see Cameron Reilly in the office on Friday, and when I read his blog I knew why - he was robbed Friday morning.

It just sucks when this happens - I remember when my car was broken into one Sunday afternoon in Leichhardt. All I had stolen was a bunch of CDs - but I had been careless keeping track of them, so I don't really know how many or which specific titles were stolen -- Do'H!

The other big loss that Cameron talks about is the video of his kids -- this stuff is irreplaceable. All I can suggest is go create some more memories!

Adventures with Orkut

So, its been 2 weeks since I started with Orkut, and a few things have changed since my last update.

These are the stats: I am connected to 39457 people through 34 friends, and I have another 20 people who I have invited, but who haven't responded.

I've noticed that a bunch of invites I sent last week have just gotten through, so I expect there is lots of email backed up.

Some other stats: profile views: 126, average path: 3.7, number of friends: 55. These are interesting, but there should be some other pieces of data, like number of degress to orkut himself.

I can see the communities and bulletin boards, but i would like to see more - like suggestion people who are similar, suggestion communities to join, even recommending music,movies or books based on interests, etc. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Tablet Developer resources

We have been nurturing Tablet PC ISVs. Late last year, we ran a series of developer workshops, and 1:1 sessions. I'm keen to see the results of these in the coming months.

The person who helped put this together is Dr Neil Roodyn, an active member of the developer community down under. Dr Neil has put together all the information on this site, which includes an ebook and a number of training courses.

I received the latest newsletter for SSW which open with the following intro :

I believe that you should design a web site to look good for IE5.5 and above. I am not saying totally forget about Netscape but dont spend much time or money on it. The reason is that only 3-4% of users surf the web with Netscape. The problem stems from the limitations of different web browsers. The big Netscape and Internet Explorer debate still continues but the reality is that Netscape just cannot provide many of the features that Internet Explorer can. More

This got me thinking about the whole browser war. To be honest, I think it's time to move on -- it's not just about the browsers. This debate is raging at the moment on a number of sites.
