TBG* and I were talking about this today. The Washington Post's headline was "California Near Financial Disaster" I was complaining that in addition to the economic downturn that would have put state budgets in a crunch in any case -- Bush's tax cut and war exacerbated the situation to a precipitous degree. Now I am far from an expert on any of this ... but it just seemed obvious to me. Turns out Matt Bivens has done some of the research and math on this:
It works out, very roughly, to $800 billion for tax cuts, and another $100 billion for war -- against about $278 billion for state budget shortfalls.
So what I am wondering is: if I am seeing this -- how come the folks in charge aren't? I've asked it before and I'll ask it again: Are they stupid or evil? And yes, I know this is a huge oversimplification. And yet... I have neither read nor heard a coherent conservative rationale for this administrations' fiscal policy. If anyone finds one - clue me in. I'd like to take a look.

Very good point re: Lawrence v. Texas:
The folks who don't like this decision are right now sending money to their interests groups and ideological counterparts in politics. Thus, it behooves those of us who are pleased with this decision to do likewise. The Village Idiot raised $5.1 million in two stops in California yesterday.

Back from our weekend jaunt . WIll share pictures and more info later.
Came home to an 85 degree house with our beleaguered AC struggling mightily to keep it below 90. Sears can't be here until the 12th to fix it. Egad! Dh will investigate other options this morning. At least the AC in the van is fixed as of today...
Off to run the "Messy Monday" Community Playtime at the Family Resource Center. Have a ton o' blog reading and writing I want to get to but it will have to wait.
