These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of misinformed politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

On Wednesday was held the Georgia High School Grad Test in Writing, one of five parts that students must pass before earning a diploma. As with many writing tests, students are given a prompt and are expected to write a persuasive essay. The prompt this time around asked the students to select an influential teacher in their school and nominate him or her for the Educator-of-the-Year award and give reasons and support for their nomination. Guess what? All six om my students taking the test nominated me. And if I must say so myself, some of them gave some thoroughly convincing arguments : ). I began class the next day with my acceptance speech....
