Adventures in Digital CameraLand

I am not a photographer and really don't have much visual skill but I have been having fun with my new digital camera.

Over the past little while I have been madly taking pictures all over the place around the neighbourhood and almost every where I go. A few weeks ago Pat and I visited local artist Doris McCarthy's home and studio, BMW Canada's unique new headquarters and the Mountain Equipment Co-op store as part of the Doors Open Toronto event. This is a great event btw -- if you have something similar where you live check it out.

A large number of unique buildings or historical sites are open to the public -- free. Our only problem was that there were just too many interesting locations to try to take in. Limiting it to the three we saw was a real challenge.

On the same weekend the Distillery Jazz Festival was running and we managed to spend a few hours there as well.

It looks like these two events (Doors Open and the Distillery Jazz Festival) are going to have become yearly events on our calendar.

One of the greatest things about digital cameras is that you can take dozens (hundreds if you have a large flash storage device -- btw thanks to Robert for helping me out there) of pictures without the cost and delay associated with film processing. I am a technical/programmer type guy and definitely into the instant gratification(or instant raspberry) that using a digital camera provides.

A few footnotes:

1) One of our reasons for wanting to visit Doris McCarthy's residence was because Pat has somewhat of a personal connection. Her aunt Doris (seems like a common name in that era) was a physical education teacher at Central Tech in the 30's when Doris McCarthy and Peter Hawarth taught art there and Pat's sister has one of McCarthy's paintings from her aunt's estate.

2) The Black '59 Caddy in the pictures is owned by a neighbour. He has owned the car for more than 10 years and it is on the road frequently around the neighbourhood. The kids used to scream and hoot when it drove by. I don't know the owner and I hope he doesn't think the kids were making fun of him. They loved the car and it has been affectionately dubbed "The Batmobile".
