VISA STANDOFF CONTINUES BETWEEN SAMOAS
APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, April 18) - More talks on inter-Samoas travel requirements are to be held next week after a meeting yesterday in American Samoa failed to find a solution to the differences that have arisen over travel restrictions between the Samoas.
American Samoa Governor Togiola Tulafono said that the Territory would not change its immigration laws amid the controversy. Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, meanwhile, said Samoa still intends to enforce new rules for American Samoans wanting to come to Samoa. These reciprocate American Samoa's requirement that Samoans must get travel permits. Both leaders also reflected on the shared cultural and historical heritage of the two Samoas. The recent tightening of travel requirements, particularly the 14-day permit, by the Territory's Attorney-General, Sialega Malaetasi Togafau, led to Samoa introducing the reciprocal requirements.
