Continuation of this post on Hogg's Blog: ********************** ...I have offered to help with her campaign because I find her to be very open, smart, thoughtful and - like me - a past PTA president at Aycock Middle School. Perhaps because of the latter reason, she has been very responsive to Aycock's needs (even though we are not in her district). In the upcoming election Cooke is being challenged by former Page High School math teacher Bill Davidson whom I chastised for flagrantly and publicly violating Guilford County School policy a couple of days ago. Davidson is backed by the ABC of Guilford County parent group because Cooke voted for implementing the High Point Choice Plan. ABC's current mission is to support any candidate who opposes any sitting school board member who voted for the Choice Plan that affected them so deeply. Davidson's website indicates that after teaching at Page for the past 11 years, he resigned this past February. Thinking this to be a little strange, I made some inquiries as to the timing of his resignation since most teachers fulfill their yearly contracts before tendering their resignations. Davidson was a high-level math teacher at Page, As such he instructed Page High's best and the brightest with a demanding and abrasive demeanor according to Page teachers I have spoken to. Last year, however, the school was having some classroom management problems in the low level classes taught by less experienced math teachers. In an effort to rectify the problem and give the lower level students the benefit of more experienced instruction, Page's administration re-assigned Davidson to teach some entry courses after mid-term. He resigned shortly after his re-assignment and shortly after that, filed to run for school board. In any case, Kris Cooke has some competition for her seat. What remains to be seen is how many District 7 voters adopt ABC's position that ALL school board members who voted for the High Point plan must go. I think their influence will be severely challenged in the Cooke/Davidson race, however. Cooke has explained her vote on the Choice Plan to me and her position was logical and well articulated. I believe that if the voters in District 7 heard it explained in such a way - her competition would be largely vanquished. I have a suggestion on how she can communicate that and other important positions in an open and personal way - and she is reading it right now. |
