Making a Mind
How does the brain make a mind? Is there a difference between the two, or are they inseparable? Michael Shermer takes a brief look in The Major Unsolved Problem in Biology in the March 2004 edition of Scientific American. Shermer reviews three new books on the subject. Susan Blackmore gently introduces the subject in a clear and accessible style in Consciousness: An Introduction. On the other hand, Gerald Edelman seems to have the scientific goods in Wider Than the Sky, but couldn't get expositional writing from a bucket. Finally, Christof Koch combines the science with the prose in The Quest for Consciousness.
