Wages don't figure in Capepillar rebound. Three days after the earnings announcement, Caterpillar's 8,000 union workers rejected a proposed contract that offered one-time bonuses instead of raises, required bigger worker contributions for health insurance, and mandated significantly lower pay for new hires. UN: Almost half of South Africans under poverty line. Almost 21,9-million South Africans live below the national poverty line of R354 a month, the United Nations said on Wednesday. "Absolute poverty has declined significantly, with the percentage of people living below the national poverty line falling from 51,1% in 1995 to 48,5% in 2002," said John Ohiorhenuan, resident coordinator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in South Africa. Services Growth Hits Record, Jobs Gain (Reuters). Reuters - A key reading of the giant U.S. services sector showed a surprising rise in April, hitting a new record and offering more evidence of economic revitalization. The Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing index rose to 68.4 in April from 65.8 in March, above Wall Street estimates of a dip to 64.0. [Yahoo! News - Business]
