"419 scams are so-called in reference to Article 419 of the Nigerian penal code which forbids fraudulent activity. The 419 scams have been in operation since the early 90s, then in the form of airmail letters from Nigeria. The Internet has massively increased their reach.
The usual come-on is an appeal to the reader's greed, offering a fat commission for processing a huge, illegally gotten sum of money. The lottery win is a more recent innovation and is a speciality of the 419 gangs in Amsterdam. Dutch police estimate that up to 300 419 fraudsters are operating in the city.
Although Nigerians invented the 419 scam, it looks like the fraud has now gone global."

Two people amongst the morning occupants of the park across from my office building routinely do their morning exercise there. A middle aged white guy who does Tai Chi, and an older Chinese lady who... we'll I don't know how to describe what she does, except to say that we call her "Floppy". She just flops her arms and legs around. Maybe it has a name, but it sure looks like a homemade exercise.
What's great is the juxtaposition between Floppy and the other guy, Nameless Man. I'm sure he thought Tai Chi was mystical eastern exercise/meditation ritual. Now he's faced with this woman. She's obviously old, but robust, whatever she's doing is working. And what she is doing, though she is Chinese, is definitely not Tai Chi. He continues to do Tai Chi. It's like he's said, I have exoticised you in the past, and now I see you as you are. Yet I have also found something that works for me.

Jens-Christian Fischer has hit email heaven using Zoe, Popfile, and the Opera mail client, M2. I'm working towards a similar setup, but on a Windows box, not Linux. That, of course, will ultimately be my downfall.
I am using Zoe. It has taken some getting used to, it requires a gestalt shift in email theory. But how many times have you wished you could find a certain old email and had to search everywhere for it? GMail promises to end all this by making your email searchable, but you have to have an in - the service hasn't launched yet, and a general willingness to have google steal your privacy. Zoe provides a similar index and search capability.
