Leukemia Treatments – Conventional

Now that we have an idea of what leukemia is the question now is what can be done about the condition. Leukemia is often said to be cancer of the blood but more correctly it is cancer of the bone marrow. Bone marrow is where many of the white blood cells are produced. They are also made in the lymphatic tissue such as the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus.

This would be a good time to mention that there are many medicalese terms that serve to confuse, confound and scare the hell out of people who do not use Latin to generate their income.  My intent is to simplify and demystify the whole area of cancer and cancer treatments as much as possible, by using plain and simple English. If you would prefer a more scientific treatment then check out this page Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia)

I think I am justified in doing this because I believe cancer is a disease of the entire body. Cancer should not be labeled and defined as belonging to a particular body part because the entire body is involved. (Hint - cancer is the result of a weakened immune system).

The standard conventional medical treatment for cancer is made up of radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, or some combination of the three.

Radiation for Cancer

Radiation is where they fire nuclear bullets into your body so that diseased tissue (cancer cells) can be fried. A beam of rays is sent through various angles so that healthy tissue is not fried as much as the diseased tissue. Hey, wait a minute. Didn’t I read somewhere that radiation causes cancer? I have a problem with the entire concept. This should give one an idea of what to expect from radiation . No thank you, I’ll pass on the radiation.

Chemotherapy for Cancer

Chemotherapy involves the introduction of chemicals (drugs) into the body to kill the cancer cells. Usually the chemicals target fast-growing cells for destruction. Cancer cells are fast growing. So are immune system cells. So are the cells that produce hair. So the result of chemo is that usually your hair will fall out and you could die from a normally mild infection because your immune system has been virtually destroyed by the toxic chemicals that are labeled medicine. Read this link for “What doctors say about Chemo Therapy”  I’ll take a pass on the chemo also.

Surgery for Cancer

Surgery, of course, involves cutting off or cutting out some part of the body that is diseased or threatened by cancer. I believe surgery is fine if you are a tree. Sure boy, cut it off, no problem. The problem is that I am not a tree and I have a great aversion to losing any part of my body. Surgery, however, is the only option I would consider and only if it involved the removal of my spleen, which could become enlarged to the point where it could cause serious problems. That will be the topic for a future discussion.

I have the firm conviction that most people who die from cancer actually die from the cancer treatments.
