Dr. Bruce Klopfenstein's Interactive Television Blog
The future of television is interactivity. Control of viewing is moving from program providers to viewers. While advertising executives needlessly worry about the impact TiVo will have on advertising, the reality is that "old fashioned" advertising will survive next to far more effiecient personalized ads delivered to specific homes. If premium "video-on-demand" providers are quick learners, then they will see the wisdon in maximizing viewership of PPV events by allowing viewers the ability to opt-in to a video commercial in return for a discount on the premium program. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Please return often to see what is happening in interactive television, and take me to task. My arguments will be made stronger by constructive criticisms.

BW Online | March 11, 2004 | TiVo's Growth Picture: Still a Little Fuzzy. Investor optimism has been on the rise as well. In the past 52 weeks, the stock has gained 90%, to $11. It's a far cry from its $70 per share peak in January 2000, but it's still a huge jump from the $3 per share price seen in 2002. QUEST FOR A DEAL. "We've had tremendous growth this past year, and momentum is so strong we have decided to institute a very aggressive marketing plan," says TiVo President Marty Yudkovitz. The Alviso (Calif.) -based outfit will spend $50 million on marketing its services, which will likely translate into a loss of $75 million to $90 million in fiscal 2005, ending Jan. 31. [Tivo News]

The fact that Nielsen wants to drop a viewer out of live viewing for pausing to run to the bathroom or answer the phone and not count them in the overnights is ridiculous. The major players should be screaming. All those TiVo viewers who rewatched Janet Jackson in the Super Bowl would be out of the measurement. [Tivo News]

Popular Science | Tinkering with TiVo. In the beginning there was TiVo, and TV addicts saw that it was good. Now, just 5 years later, digital video recorders (DVRs) are everywhere from your DVD player to your PC to your cable box. And while TiVo (and its longtime competitor ReplayTV) still charges a fee for its guide service, several of the new DVRs use free proprietary guides. In other words, TiVo's competition is thick. But TiVo isn't just any DVR. Unlike its competitors, it's got a pathologically loyal customer base. (Googling the phrase "I love my TiVo" turns up thousands of testimonials. [Tivo News]
