A Friday Afternoon Laugh from Andy Johnson
"Andy Johnson" is one of those names that has floated around my life since around 1994. Now, to most of you, the name “Andy” matched with the name “Johnson” probably sounds fairly typical and unassuming. However, for me and several of my friends, "Andy Johnson" is a name for a man of legend. You see, just as I and my friends arrived at college, Mr. Johnson had just ended his college career (or at least his undergraduate career at our college). Thus, all of our older friends spoke of him as if he was one of the funniest guys on the earth. There were many Andy Johnson stories. “When Andy Johnson did this, and Andy Johnson did that...” Javier, in particular, went on and on about him. Well, I bring this up, because this past Friday afternoon was a fairly typical Friday afternoon. I was rushing around trying to finish up a week's worth of work in about 3 hours, which is always challenging, but, embarrassingly enough, not impossible. In my haste, I decided I needed to take a break and enjoy a diet Pepsi. As I was partaking in this beverage (light, crisp, refreshing), I skimmed over a few blogs here and there. I was reading a blog post by Crowley about his new TV. At the bottom of this post was a comment that read, “What God and 0% financing has brought together, let no man tear asunder.” For some reason, this comment struck me as being absolutely hilarious, probably much funnier than it actually was. In any case, it brightened up an otherwise stressful and unnecessarily serious Friday afternoon. I was very grateful for this. Here was another case where some unknown human being has brightened my day. Who do you suppose left that comment? The name was a secretly coded word, "AnJo." Yes, Andy Johnson. As a point of fact, I have actually met Andy Johnson in the past. I can’t remember where exactly, but I want to say that that we have met two times. If I had to bet, I am pretty sure one of these was in Rock Island (maybe) and the other was in Crowley’s place when he lived with Herlihy. I know that I’ve crossed paths with Mr. Johnson, because I remember thinking, “Oh, so that is Andy Johnson. He doesn’t look that funny.” I don’t remember where I had this thought, but I am quite certain that this thought passed across my mind’s eye. Yet, again, we learn that looks can be deceiving, because Andy Johnson is that funny. And, luckily for me, he reached out across the great divide of cyber space and “cracked my shit up.” Thanks, Andy Johnson, wherever you are.
