This article
in the Denver Post reviews the history of Oil Shale
development in Colorado and includes this nifty graphic about how it
works.
The bit about heating the shale while simultaneously freezing the surroundings is corroborated by this presentation by Stephen B. Andrews at Fisk Planetarium. I wonder how much net energy could be extracted this way.
Other tidbits from the Stephen Andrews talk...
- Estimate of 10 calories or hydrocarbon inputs for every calorie of food grown.
- Fertilizer
- Pesticides
- Tractors
- Excerpts from the film. The End of Suburbia.
