Create smaller networks within your libraryNing.com - Roll Your Own Social Network - The Rise Of The Social Niche-Work.

to create their own social networks on any topic they want useing a log of social media tools like photo sharing, video sharing, blogs etc. There are an amazing array of features avalable and all customizable through a nice ajaxy interface. Basically if you want to create your own version of myspace or facebook for your own college you can, think of it like yahoo groups 2.0. Check out the Battlestar Galactica group on Ning

Ning Networks

To get a good overview of Ning you should check out this scoble show video of the CEO walking you through how you create the site.

Potentially Ning could provide the platform for users to create much more meaningful social “niche-works” which could erode the power of some of the monolithic networks like myspace, facebook etc. With all the companies running to put their pages up on myspace, wouldn’t they be better off cultivating their own social network around their brands?

Remember Vortals?

Tip of the hat to my pals at Adaptive Path who were involved in helping think through and design the tools for people to build their own social networks, good job guys.

 Web metrics for librarians

Using Web Server Logs to Track Users Through the Electronic Forest
by Karen A. Coombs

Thanks Librarian.net for the link to this great Information Today article on using server logs to track where library users travel on library web sites. Whether open source software or commercial tracking packages, librarians need to use these measurements (with surveys and usability evaluations) to improve access for users. Good links to other articles!

Human gene transfer to cows accomplished - for human breast milk?

Let us hope that business doesn’t gloss over the risks of introducing cross-species infections to make a buck (or a yuan) A frightening scenario would be this “human breast milk” (from these cows) might introduce a global viral pandemic. Reckless Science and Big Business will be this species downfall!!

Folksonomy and metadata assignment

Link to a nice paper on folksonomy or social classification, which I think is an important clue to address the dynamic aspect using controlled(??) vocabularies in metadata assignment But folksonomy is ONLY part of metadata/classification resolution, because it doesn’t handle synonyms and content types...

more on folksonomy and more on metadata
