Fernandes Takes First-Round Lead in Louisiana FUTURES Classic

Lisa FernandesLAFAYETTE, La., April 7, 2006 -- The Texas swing of the Duramed FUTURES Tour is two weeks away and already, blustery conditions are giving players a taste of rounds to come at the $75,000 Louisiana FUTURES Classic presented by Cox. But Lisa Fernandes, leaning on six years of professional experience and a cooperative putter, fired a three-under-par score of 69 to grab the event's first-round lead.

"I played in the pro-am on Thursday in the same kind of wind and I knew how windy it could be and how tough this course could play," said Fernandes, 28, of Jacksonville, Fla. "I just happened to make a few bombs out there today."

Changed Choi Returns For Second Season

There were mixed feelings last August when Hye Jung Choi watched three of her compatriots each earn one of the five available 2006 LPGA Tour cards at the last tournament of the 2005 season. On one hand, she was happy to see good friends Seon-Hwa Lee and Sun Young Yoo join Kyeong Bae as the latest young Koreans to "graduate" from the Duramed FUTURES Tour and move on to the LPGA. On the other hand, there was a nagging ache in her stomach that she wasn't among them.

"At first, I was a little jealous, but after a while, I found that I needed to work more and change everything in my life," admitted Choi, 21, of Seoul, Korea, currently playing in her second season on the Duramed FUTURES Tour. "Now, I know I can do that and if I go to the LPGA, I will be even better because I am more focused."

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.--With the TPC at Sawgrass playing at its toughest, Canadian Stephen Ames somehow managed a smile late Saturday afternoon. And why not? The Calgary resident posted a 2-under 70 and has a one shot lead with just 18 holes to play at The Players Championship.
