Stress has become a hot topic today because of its connection to several life threatening diseases and conditions.  But stress is not what happens to us. It is our reaction or response to what is happening around (or within) us.

Stress is connected to measurable brain state that can be easily re-programmed to produce a stress free life. Here is how that works:

The human brain is not the mystery it once was. Modern neuroscience has provided insights and tools that have revealed amazing insights into how our brains work.

Your brain is a biochemical/electrical structure, and emits measurable electrical waves tied to specific mental states. Just as watching a flickering fire causes your brainwaves to slow and relax, engineered external sound stimulation also encourages your brain to relax into certain highly beneficial electrical patterns.

This is called brainwave entrainment, and is a proven method of actually training your brain to accomplish such things as: instant stress reduction, enhanced creativity, and even higher states insights and experiences.

Stress and Your Brain
When you experience stress you are actually experiencing a very distinct brain condition. This condition is marked by what we call Beta brainwaves. Beta brainwaves vibrate on the average from about 15 to 30 Hz, or cycles per second.

There is nothing inherently wrong with beta brainwaves. These are the same brain frequencies you normally use anytime you are talking or using your mind to try to solve a problem using the tools of logic.

But a problem can occur when these brainwaves become predominant and begin to spike into higher frequencies – and even override the contribution your more relaxed Alpha brainwaves are designed to offer.

Your Stress Free Brainwaves
Alpha brainwaves vibrate slower that Beta brainwaves -- between 7.5 and 13 Hz. These brainwaves are present alpha brainwaves when you are alert and relaxed, and not actively processing mental information. Alpha waves are usually strongest over your occipital (back of the head) and frontal cortex.

Alpha brainwaves are mentally integrative, promote mental resourcefulness, and allow you accomplish tasks in a calm, non stress manner. I personally feel alpha provides the bridge between the conscious and subconscious parts of your mind.

Alpha brainwaves rise from the white matter of your brain -- the “carriage” connecting all the parts of your brain together – and seem to be related to the highly desirable whole brain thinking experience.
You can increase alpha by closing your eyes or deep breathing. 

Alpha brainwaves are linked to:
• Extroversion -- Introverts have fewer alpha brainwaves,  
• Stress Free Living – Alpha-dominated  brainwave states lead straight to very positive stress management capabilities, 
• Whole Brain Thinking – The recently-discovered “higher states” phenomenon in which your entire cortex vibrates at one integrated frequency.

Alpha Brainwave Training

In this edition of the Stress Cops PodCast Radio Show we bring you a special article about stress, and how and why so many doctors now recommend brainwave training for stress reduction and stress management.

There are five scientific facts you need to know about stress and your brain.

FACT 1: When you are in the grips of stress, there is a lot of intense stress related electrical activity going on in your brain.

FACT 2: This stress related brain activity can be measured using EEG (electro-encephalography) technology. EEG has been around since the 1930's.

FACT 3: Depending on what you are doing about your stress, this electrical activity goes through changes. If you manage to relax, your brainwaves are suddenly very different than when you are deep in the grips of intense stress, or trying to solve a complex mental problem.

FACT 4: There is now definite scientific proof that stress actually kills brain cells. And the cumulative effect of chronic stress is reduced mind power, less mental clarity, impaired judgment, and serious memory losses!

The Scientific Evidence
Problem 1.  Loss of Brain Tissue from Stress
University of California at San Francisco researchers report that stress causes a serious loss of brain tissue (from brain cell death). And Washington University School of Medicine researchers report that even mild flare-ups of psychological stress damage memory and brain functions. 

A major National Institute of Health study shows that even mild stress releases a brain enzyme linked to bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder. This explains why stress leads to disturbed thinking, impaired judgment, impulsivity, and the distractibility so common when you are stressed. 

Solution:
Over 40 years of research and clinical studies into stress have proven that brainwave training can immediately reduce your stress, repair the damage, and train your brain to avoid future stress related damage. It is the ultimate stress management tool.

Problem 2:  Physical Brain Shrinkage
Many researchers have found that certain stress related thinking patterns damage thinking and memory, and even result in physical brain shrinkage.

Dr Lupien of  McGill University in Montreal studied brains scans of 92 people over 15 years. The brains of those experiencing the stress of low self-esteem had shrunk to 20% smaller than those who felt optimistic and good about themselves. The high stress individuals with low self-esteem also performed far worse in memory and learning tests.

Research has proven your brain is capable of full recovery from stress. It is actually plastic, and with the correct stimulation can continue to correct the ravages of stress and expand, even into advanced age.

Researchers Siegfried and Othmer report that a regime of brainwave training can yield a 23% increase in IQ, plus substantial increases in self-esteem, motivation and stress free energy.
