Burning Man Project in the Nevada Desert
The Temple Burning Man

Penny & Jim Malmberg, from the Edmonton roots music group Back Porch Swing, went to the Burning Man Project in 2004. Burning Man is described as "an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance." Thie annual event is held in the temporary "Black Rock City" on the playa (the Nevada desert) 127 miles from Reno, near the communities of Empire and Gerlach.

Some pointers provided by Penny:

  • Bring eye goggles and a scarf and a water bottle that you can carry around all the time. Even if you are just going to the bathroom. It might take you hours. ( sandstorms come and go all the time.)
  • Don't forget to pack your underwear in a plastic zip lock bag or you will have sand in your crotch.
  • Don't forget to bring "shwag" to pass out to all of your new friends that you will meet.
  • No "moop" ( matter out of place) on the playa. so be prepared to have something to put your garbage in.
  • No trace event so whatever you bring in, you must bring out.
  • Wear something glowing at night time so you won't be run over in the dark by an art car.

Attendees at Burning Man are expected to stay the entire duration, which is is always held the week prior to and including Labor Day. On the Satuday night there is always the "Burning Man".
