The area of British Columbia (BC) known as the West Kootenays, is great destination for a road trip with mountains, ghost towns, hot springs and lake ferry crossings on the beautiful Kootenay Lake and Upper Arrow Lake. The West Kootenays are in the south-central part of BC along the US border with the states of Washington and Idaho, where there are several boarder crossings (Cascade/Christina Lake, Paterson/Rossland, Waneta/Trail, Nelway/Salmo, Rykerts, Kingsgate and Roosville).

The four western provinces in Canada (Alberta, British Coumbia (BC), Manitoba, Saskatchewan) all have excellent opportunities for camping and have very good provincially run campgrounds as well as those in National Parks. There are also amazing opporunities for back country trekking and camping in the mountainous areas of Alberta, BC and the northern parts of all four provinces. For trekkers that venture into these regions, they should be trained in maps and compass use and proper gear, clothing, food storage/disposal and bear avoidance skills are mandatory! When in the back country, in regards to bears and any of the wildlife, trekkers must be aware that they are the intruders and must have respect for all wildlife.

The three northern territories Yukon, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut also have amazing opportunities for camping and more so than the southern provinces potentially extreme isolation. This is particularilly true for those wishing to travel the Dempster Highway (671 kilo/417 miles) that runs from near Dawson City, in the Yukon, across the Arctic Circle to Innuvik, NWT. For Nunavut, which is in the eastern Arctic it is recommended that even experienced campers hire a guide or outfitter. There is also no access to this territory by road.

The summer camping season in the southern provinces runs from aproximately the Victoria Day long weekend in late May, till the Labour Day weeknd in early September. The season varies with it being shorter in the northern territories to longer on the the west coast, Vancouver Island and the southern parts of all four provinces.

Weather conditions can vary with daytime extremes reach +30 C and night (particularily in the mountains) it can going down to freezing levels. With climat change heavy rains can occur even in semi-arrid areas of the prairies. Prepare for both extremes, although winter wear is not required, clothing should be planned for layers and have outerwear that is waterproof.

During the peak season reservations are suggested. There are also specialyy designated sites for group excursions. For backcountry travel, in the National Parks, permits are required. The following are links to sites about campgrounds in western Canadian provinces and territories:

Many of the famous Alaska cruise lines, depart from Vancouver, BC (beginning in June of each year), with spectacular scenery, glaciers and possible opportunities for whale watching. Alaska cruises are either one week or two weeks, and there are two routes: the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska, but they both take a similar route for most of the trip—travelling along the easterly coast of a long string of islands up the BC coast, on a waterway known as the Inside Passage.

From Skagway, Alaska travellers have the option of continuing into the interior of Alaska, or leaving the United States and returning Canada in the Yukon Territory, where you can visit famous Dawson City the centre of the Klondike Gold Rush.
